Jana Trail
Taiping Tin Trail
Matang - KSP Trail

Walk this trail which takes you into the beautiful setting of the Sungai Bukit Jana (Jana Hill River), at the foothills of the northern face of Bukit Larut (Larut Hill). Once the site of an extensive 19th century tin-mining area, it is now a secondary forest dotted by durian orchards, old buffalo trails and an important place for the local community who still gather wild edibles as food and herbs. The pristine waters of Sungai Jana is also a valuable space for all manner of flora and fauna. Be prepared to be enthralled by local folklore, stacking walls left by 19th century tin-miners and the immense biological diversity by the flowing waters of this magnificent river. The walk will end with a simple tasting of the foraged edibles served in a hut along the river.

This trail offers you an understanding of Taiping whose origin is rooted in tin, the famed Larut Wars and the intervention of the British colonial government marking their formal entry into the Federated Malay States in 1874. You will also explore the consequences thereafter, the impact of colonial presence in the building of the town, the development of infrastructure, the growth of a plural society and cultural influence in the hearts and minds of the populace. Stops include: the Clocktower (starting point), Lake Gardens, Taiping Central Market (1885), a view of the intergenerational businesses and end at Matang Museum before returning to Taiping. Lunch (self-paying) is at a local vintage food court.

The 40,000 hectare Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve, just 10 kilometres from Taiping, is one of the best examples of sustainable forest management in the world.
